Usually during the time of pregnancy, the stretch marks will appear from or around the sixth month.From the sixth month onwards, the baby will grow faster and so the skin over the belly will get stretch according to that.
Nevertheless, some women will also have the stretch marks on the buttocks, thighs and hips. Stretch marks are more likely to occur around the areas, which store more fat and undergoes more stretching.
The collagen in the body tissues will break apart when the skin is stretched to a maximum level and this will lead to the rips and tears in the skin. The tiny tears will be healing in the future and they may remain some scars.
The stretch marks usually appear pink, red, dark brown or purple and they will be noticeable in the beginning. After the delivery, they fade in time.
Heredity plays an important role in getting the stretch marks. The skin tone, nutritional aspects, the skin condition and the total increase in the weight during the entire period of pregnancy; all these factors also have some impacts to leave stretch marks other than the genetic aspects.
Women who carried a large baby or who had comparatively large quantity of amniotic fluid will have the chance to get more stretch marks after the delivery.
We can take some precautions by doing regular exercises and controlling the diet in order to prevent the weight gain more than the normal level.
During the pregnancy, we should try to keep the skin well moisturized. The dry skin has more chance to get the stretch marks easily. Some good oils, creams or lotions can help us to moisturize the skin and they will reduce the itching sensation due to the stretching.
These applications will also improve the total elasticity of the skin. Such products can help us to a certain limit.
The pregnant women will usually be cautious about their baby’s health and so they will try to follow a healthy diet, which is good for the health of the skin too. The leaves, fruits, vegetables rich with the Vitamins C, E, and zinc, silica,etc all will help the skin in stretching better.
After the delivery, we can apply some topical ointments like Retin-A also can reduce the stretch marks to an extent. All such external applications should be done during the first few days after the delivery.
